The proposal and nearly two dozen others in the California Community College system are among a new generation of affordable housing projects aimed at bringing stability to underserved community college students, many of whom are under immense pressure to balance school and work, amid skyrocketing rent and other costs.īut the Cerritos plan is missing a critical element: money. “What we have seen is that when we give them that opportunity, they perform better in the classroom.” And I’m not saying that just in a hyperbole,” said Cerritos College President Jose Fierro. “The community college housing project is a project that will transform the lives of our students. Additionally, in 2018, Holmes became the first community college in the nation to offer the Applied Behavior Analysis course which counts toward the 40 hours of training needed to apply for the Registered Behavior Technician credential.Plans to build affordable housing for 400 community college students at Cerritos College are all drawn up, featuring communal kitchens and spaces where tutors and mental health specialists can visit students. Classes are offered in various formats, including: face-to-face (day and evening), hybrid (online convenience plus face-to-face), eLearning (online via the internet), 8-week short-term, 4-week short term and accelerated (10 and 15 days). Holmes also offers more than 50 academic majors, approximately 30 professional programs, over 50 extracurricular activities, nine athletic sports and a variety of student support services. Holmes offers several campus locations, including the main campus in Goodman, the Grenada Campus, Ridgeland Campus, Yazoo Center in Yazoo City and the Attala Center in Kosciusko. The college has grown from an agricultural junior college in Goodman into a multi-campus institution that offers the Associate of Arts degree, Associate of Applied Science degree, technical and career certificates, and workforce training. Since 1925, more than 20,000 alumni have received an education and/or trained for the workforce at Holmes.
